STEEP Game Review

Even if you’ve never been to the Alps, you probably admire their grandness and beauty. Steep is an MMO arcade with some simulation elements that welcomes you to try your skills in mountain entertainment. It has a lot to offer, though there are some nuances.

Graphics: 5

The most prominent part of Steep is the environment. The developers recreated real mountains, like Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and others. The peaks are closer to each other than in reality, but it’s the liberty designers can afford. They are great and interactive, that’s what matters. And they can speak!

Movements are smooth and spectacular. The game runs at stable 60 FPS at 1080p, and you can even record your greatest flips… or flops. What you get is Instagram- or Vimeo-ready fragments you can even make your animated avatars from.

Gameplay: 5

There are four types of winter sports available: skiing, snowboarding, paragliding and wingsuit flying. Yes, you can like some of them better than others. But your progress requires you succeed in all of them.

Some spots are available from the start. Others need to be unlocked by earning a certain score. And there are some you can discover by roaming that wide world. Either way has its own fun.

Multiplayer elements include global leaderboard and real-time competition in a certain sport you’re into right now. Other players become visible as you play at the same time. You can see their results and try to beat them by completing missions and doing tricks. Collisions between players are possible too if you activate this feature.

The story mode is also here, but it seems a draft of what it should have been. It offers no clear storyline you’d like to follow; it’s rather an attempt to inhale some meaning into all the tricks you do (if they don’t attract you without that).

The developers emphasize that Steep is skill-based, so you can’t unlock any equipment that drastically upgrades your abilities. It’s a feature, not a bug.

Controls: 4.5

Though the game contains different activities, the developers did their best to unify the controls or all of them. The full info on controls is available on Ubisoft official site. If you’re new to this, it should help with getting used to Steep. But anyway, different equipment requires special skills from the player, so you’ll still have to master each. Some do it in trial-and-error mode, but we meant something while providing a link.

Replay Value: 4

The game is rather about having fun with the process than about beating scores. And if you like to dissolve into this mountain transparency and concentrate on the way you move, leaving the world outside, you can play Steep endlessly. Otherwise, its limited stories and not-so-cool multiplayer mode will soon get you fed up.

In spite of multiplayer options, the developers obviously put the process before any competition, and it shows.

This great game is to be called an arcade, as the moves are not as realistic as could be; they are on their own frequency. But the world is really great and open to discover. So forget about any secret mission, and just enjoy the process.
