NBA 2K14 Review

The 2K14 installment of NBA series was released just when Xbox One came in to replace Xbox 360. One of the first for the later, for the former it was just top.

Graphics: 4.5

Making it for Xbox 360, the developers unleashed its full potential. What may seems no challenge for Xbox One is quite a mission on 360. From 2018 it may seem not a big deal, but see audience moving, the camera always flying around the court, players controlled by AI moving quite naturally, and video replays just in the right time.

Commentaries are also worth mentioning. Sportscasters do their job well, and you can hear what’s going on as clear as you see it.

Gameplay: 5

The on-court part of the game didn’t bring any global changes. Though some elements have been reworked, they are barely noticeable by themselves. Anyway, these little moves fill the whole picture, making movements more realistic. The mechanics remains intact. You control one player at a time – the one with the ball or closest to it. The rest have an AI behind, and it also grew a bit better this year.

The new introduced mode is LeBron: Path to Greatness. That’s why he’s on the cover! Instead of just replaying LeBron’s way up to the top, you rather play his hypothetical future career that might take place in the following years (on with the Heat or unleashed for more medals, and here in 2018 we can compare this alternative history to what really happened).

Besides being a player, you can also walk in the shoes of a coach or a manager in special modes. In MyTeam you collect NBA stars to create the team of your dream and rule it in matches. The Association mode is available for both local and online competition. MyGM is a manager simulation mode. MyPark is a place you can play with your friends online.

Controls: 4.5

If you played previous NBA games on Xbox, you'd feel nothing new. Even if you’re new to NBA but experienced in other games, you’ll see controls as logical.

But there are much more actions available through Kinect voice commands or Pro Stick. The latter gives you more control over offensive actions. Kinect offers special options for MyCAREER defense and offense moves, as well as for regular mode.

The manual available on Microsoft site contains all the explanations on controls (and on everything in the game).

Replay Value: 4

It’s a sports game, that’s it. If LeBron story is of no more interest after you’ve progressed through both branches, all the other modes are inexhaustible. Play MyCAREER, MyPark and different interactive modes to meet the endless combinations and possibilities.

We must also notice that replayability of older games depends on what console you use. If it’s Xbox One, it may fail the competition to newer games; but on Xbox 360 it may still be the king.

Adding almost nothing new to NBA series, this game is a good follower of its predecessors. Now we know that the series can do better, and we don’t mean only graphical potential of the new hardware. But it’s quite decent, and not worse than NBA 2K13.
